Chinese President Hu Jintao Present at the Closing Ceremony of China-Brazil Seminar on Trade and Economic Cooperation

Brazil time Nov. 12, in the afternoon, Chinese President Hu Jintao who was on a state visit to Brazil, was present at the closing ceremony of China-Brazil Seminar on Trade and Economy Cooperation and delivered a speech. He emphasized that to enhance trade and economic cooperation and to promote mutual prosperity were an important part of China-Brazil strategic partnership and also a common task of the two sides.

President of Brazil Lula accompanied Hu Jintao to attend the ceremony. Lula gave a speech at the ceremony saying that Brazil recognized China's market economy status, which indicated China-Brazil strategic partnership is a substantial one strengthening of China-Brazil trade and economic cooperation would further reinforce the China-Brazil strategic partnership and benefit people in the two countries.

Hu Jintao said in his address that the development of China-Brazil strategic partnership was benifical to people in the two countries. In 2003, bilateral trade between China and Brazil amounted to US$8 billion, China purchased US$6 billion products from Brazil. In the first 9 months, China bought another US$6.6 billion products, up by over 50% on a year-on-year basis. China has been the third biggest export market of Brazil. Meanwhile, China invested to set up more than 70 enterprises in Brazil. Over 300 foreign investment enterprises in China were made by Brazil enterprises, especially, the cooperation in earth resource and satellite between the two countries set up a typical example for South-South Hi-tech Cooperation.

Hu Jintao said that China and Brazil had an extensive market prospect and huge development potential and were strongly complementary to each other in foreign trade, which provided many opportunities to expand cooperation in trade and economy. Hu Jintao expressed his hope that bilateral trade would reach US$20 billion within 3 coming years through mutual efforts. Therefore, He gave the following 4 suggestions:

Firstly, Take advantage of each other's strong points to promote mutual development.

Secondly, To broaden cooperation fields and to renovate cooperation forms.

Fourthly, To persist in negotiation and coordination to safeguard mutual benefit.

China-Brazil Seminar on Trade and Economy cooperation was jointly sponsored by Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and lasted for one day. Nearly 400 enterprises representatives from both China and Brazil attended the Seminar.

Mr. Bo Xilai, Minister of Commerce and Amorim, Brazilian Foreign Minister signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Trade and Investment Between PRC and Brazil in the morning of Nov. 12 on behalf of their respective government. And Brazil recognized China's market economy status in the memorandum of understanding.

Governments of both countries agreed on enhancing cooperation and promoting exchange properly resolving issues in inspection and quarantine, promoting cooperation in aircraft manufacture ect. and pushing bilateral development of trade and economic relations.
